The Formula Student competition provides students with a platform to apply the theory and skills learned in their degree to a real life engineering environment.  Run by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, the competition is a must have on the CV of any aspiring engineer as it proves to employers that the student has more than just a theoretical knowledge, but moreover the ability to translate this into a practical understanding of their subject.  In addition to gaining practical engineering experience, participating students have the opportunity to gain and develop a range of other skills including management and leadership, communication and organisation.

Being a part of the competition is much more than just designing and building a car though, it’s all about running a successful works race team. We also have a team dedicated to a range of non-technical roles including accounting, media, events and communicating with current and potential partners.

How To Join

Positions within HWRacing are only open to undergraduate and MSc students of Heriot-Watt University. Due to the wide range of roles that there are to fill within the team, we seek students not only from the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, but also from the wider University.   What’s even better is, because we promote an environment of active learning, new members are not required to have previous experience – all we ask is that you come eager to learn, ready to work and prepared to push yourself to the limit of your abilities.

Design Competition

This year we’re challenging you to design a jack, used to prop up the rear of the car. The winning design will be manufactured and used at next year’s competition. The winning designer and runners up will be offered a place on the team and opportunity to go to the Formula Student competition in July 2017.

Interested? Then come along to JN1.03, James Nasmyth Building on Wednesday 14th September 2016 at 5:15pm with a USB flash drive and we’ll give you everything to get started with. Alternatively, send us an email to or pop into the office (JN1.14).

You’ll have a chance to see our car that competed in the 2016 competition, HWR-06 at the Fresher’s Fair on 7th September 2016.

Alternatively, there are also opportunities for students commencing their 4th year to use their role within the team as a topic for their dissertation/project.  If this is something which you are interested in, please contact us as soon as possible, before the topic selection deadline, to discuss your needs and to allow us to make any necessary arrangements.
