HWR06 at FS2016

HWRacing’s latest car HWR-06 was entered into 2016 Formula Student Competition. HWR-06 used the Honda CBR600RR 2006 engine. Unfortunately, HWR-06 was heavier than its predecessor weighing in at 274.5kg. However, the car finished all dynamic events, which was a first for the team. The vastly improved reliability over previous cars was due to the extensive testing time before the competition. The team, led by team Lewis Crichton came 54th overall and 2nd in Scotland. With the best individual result being 26th in Endurance.

The team reduced in number a little to 16 students from Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Logistics.

In HWRacing’s fifth year, we entered the Class 2 competition which is more based around the design and conceptual analysis of the car in the absence of a running vehicle. Parts that had been manufactured were put on display for the design judges to scrutinise including uprights, the wiring loom, A-arms and other suspension components, along with chassis cut-outs to display our ability to profile and weld the car’s structural skeleton. The team managed to finish 5th in the Class 2 competition, making HWRacing the highest placed Scottish university in the Class 2 rankings.

HWR-04 at FS2013

In HWRacing’s fourth year, HWR-04 was entered into the Formula Student competition. HWR-04 again used the same Honda CBR600RR engine and it was again lighter than its predecessor, weighing 265kg. The team, led by Lewis Crichton, failed to improve on HWR-03′s result and came 58th overall.
HWR-04 was the team’s fourth entry to the Silverstone competition. From the very start the project was organised and planned by introducing a new structure allowing the team to be more productive and efficient. The team’s size remained similar, with students from Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Robotics and Cybertronics and Mathematical Physics.

HWR-03 at FS2012

In HWRacing’s third year, HWR-03 was entered into the Formula Student competition. HWR-03 again used the same Honda CBR600RR engine and it was again lighter than its predecessor, weighing 260kg. The team, led by Jonny Stevens, managed to improve on HWR-02’s result and came 46th overall, with the best individual event result being 3rd in the Business Presentation.

HWR-03 was the team’s third entry to the Silverstone competition. From the very start the project was organised and planned by introducing a new structure allowing the team to be more productive and efficient. The team doubled in number from 12 to 25 students from Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Robotics and Cybertronics and Mathematical Physics.

HWR-02 at FS2011

Following on from the lessions learned with the first car, Heriot-Watt Racing produced the HWR-02. Looking to improve on issues that held up the car last year, the HWR-02, powered by the same Honda CBR600RR engine as before, was lower and lighter than its predecessor weighing 289kg. Led by Simon Spence the team went on to score nearly 40pts more than the previous year finishing 53rd overall (188.0pts), but with the team best single result to date finishing =11th in Business Presentation.

HWR-01 at FS2010

In July 2010, the culmination of years of preparation, this first HWR racecar competed at Formula Student. The HWR-01 was a steel tube-framed racecar powered by a Honda CBR600RR engine and weighing 333kg. The team led by Malcolm Thomson led to a 53rd place overall finish with 148.6pts, with the best individual event result of 23rd in the Cost event.
